A debate was held at the Temple of Poetry, in Parque dos Poetas, aimed at preparing the candidacy of Oeiras for the European Capital of Culture in 2027.

The Municipal Director of Education, Social Development and Culture of Oeiras, Jorge Barreto Xavier, will be the commissioner of this candidacy. At a Preparatory Conference, which brought together several specialists in the field of Culture, organizational models and cultural activities from previous editions, characteristics of territorial development in the municipality of Oeiras and guidelines of the European Commission for the application were discussed. Among the speakers, we highlight the presence of Robert Palmer, director of two European capitals of Culture (Glasgow, 1990 and Brussels, 2000), which Barreto Xavier considered “inspiring”.

The Mayor of Oeiras, Isaltino Morais, presided the closing of the meeting and was “excited”. “It never crossed my mind that Oeiras was a candidate for European Capital of Culture, but the truth is that we have everything for a very strong candidacy and it is very important for Oeiras to win this candidacy. I will give all the gas to the team, and we will always win, whatever the result, because we will work hard ", he said.

On the occasion, Isaltino Morais underlined the work carried out by the Municipality in the preservation of cultural heritage, namely in the recovery of the National Agronomic Station, in which it foresees an investment of around 8 million euros, and in the Convent of Cartuxa.

For the latter, the mayor predicts that by the end of this quarter there will be an agreement with the Government for its acquisition so that the Municipality can invest around 4 million euros.

It will be the fourth time that Portugal has hosted the event, after Lisbon (1994), Porto (2001) and Guimarães (2012). Competitions for the award are launched six years before, so in the case of Portugal, the selection process it will only start in 2021.
